Spanish Interpreter Certification

In terms of Spanish interpreter certification, Language Testing International offers the widest variety of testing choices that encompasses every single skill need to be a successful interpreter. It is significantly more difficult to actually interpret instead of simply translating language as you go. Being a successful interpreter requires understanding language on multiple levels as well as being able to be culturally conversant. Because language is intrinsically linked to culture, simply being able to mechanically speak the words of a given language is not enough to truly understand the way a culture and language works. Fluent speaking, then, covers everything from academic language to common idioms, axioms, and sayings.

To begin with, language always has to operate on a variety of levels, ranging from the literal to the figurative. While there are many words that have the exact meaning that occurs in the dictionary, there are just as many words that exist where the word either has both a literal and a connotative meaning, or has transformed throughout the course of the culture to have specific meanings that are not explicitly indicated in the word. In order for someone to be a spoken interpreter, a speaker of Spanish must be able to understand the figurative language in both cultures as well as their meaning.

Another skill needed to be able to translate between Spanish and any other language is the ability to navigate each culture’s idioms. An idiom, also known as an axiom, or simply as a saying, is a specific set of figurative language that is native to each individual culture. Often considered “old wives’ sayings” or the things that one’s grandparents often say, these axioms are endemic to each culture and required for understanding both a language and how that culture works in speech.

Finally, language and culture always establishes a sense of control, relationship level, or tone of an interaction. Being able to be an interpreter requires understanding both cultures equally well and how each one approaches the given situation. Further, being an interpreter requires taking the emotions, intention, and desires of both sides into consideration and being able to effectively communicate between both parties without conveying any unintentional statement of relationship that may, or may not, exist.

Language Testing International is one of the companies which is authorized by the ACTFL; the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Language. This endorsement by the ACTFL means that you can trust the certification process from LTI to make sure that an interpreter between Spanish and any other language will be effectively with both languages on many levels and able to accurately translate both words, and intentions. In terms of a Spanish interpreter certification process, there are none better.
